When Buying Gifts For a New Baby… Don’t Forget The New Mommy!
I will never forget it as long as I live, I was sitting in my living room with my newborn son surrounded by boxes and bags of new baby blankets, onesies, diapers, outfits, rattles, etc… when a friend of mine stopped by with a very different gift.
She brought me a gift certificate for a massage and I cried, I am not sure why, but I just remember that her thoughtfulness touched me very deeply as a brand new mother who felt a little lost in a sea of baby gear.
Since that time I have tried to remember to bring gifts to my new mother friends that not only honor their new arrival but their sacrifice and struggles as well. I thought that I would share with you some ideas that would make great “new mommy gifts”…
♦ A homemade bath basket made up of bubble bath, bath salts, nice smelling lotions and soaps, and even a few candles that mom can light and try to relax in between baby’s feedings and naps.
♦ A relaxing scented candle. Scents like lavender can be very relaxing on a new mother’s stressed nerves.
♦ Team up with other friends or family members and give the new mother in your life a real treat, hire a housekeeper to come in once to clean the house for her.
♦ Organize meals for the new mother and her family for a few days or week after they come home from the hospital. This really helps new mothers focus on their baby and getting settled back into their new routines without having to worry about meals or groceries for a few days.
♦ A gift certificate for dinner that the new mother and her husband can use on their first night out without the baby… this way they won’t have to feel bad about eating out with money they should be spending on diapers and formula.
♦ A gift certificate for a pampering session. A new haircut, a massage, a manicure, a pedicure, or anything else that you think that the new mommy would enjoy… it really makes them feel special to think of themselves for just a few minutes again.
♦ A great new movie on DVD that the new mommy can watch when she is up in the middle of the night feeding a fussy baby.
♦ A book on CD that a new mother can listen to while she takes care of her new infant, without having to juggle one more thing in her hands.
So the next time that someone you know and love is blessed with a new baby, try to remember that mommies deserve a little gift too. Honor their hard work and new bundle of joy by making that mother feel special and loved in such a simple way.

Yes, you’re right. Mommies are the ones who suffer during delivery. I always make sure i buy both gifts to the babies and the mommies.
