5 Ideas on How to Play With Your 4-8 Month Old Baby
A week or so ago I shared with you some ideas for playing with your 0-3 month old infant, a hard age to interact with. However, as your baby begins to enter his or her fourth month of life you will begin to really notice an increase in the amount of interaction that they will have with you. So I have been putting together this list of ideas on playing with your baby as they become more mobile and responsive to you.
♦ Babies at this age suddenly seem to discover the fact that they have feet… it’s not just that they have them but what they are able to do with them that fascinates them. Many infants this age begin kicking and love to play with kick gyms that you can place by babies feet.
These gyms are designed that when your baby kicks it, lights, sounds, and movement will occur. This is also a great way for small babies to begin to learn the concept of cause and effect, because they soon realize that their kicking is what is causing the toy to come to life.
♦ Another fun thing about this age range is that they still have no concept of object permanence, which means when something is out of sight they think that it has magically disappeared. Because of this infants at this stage absolutely love a good game of peek-a-boo.
♦ Toys that move around are great at this age, pull toys on a string that you can drag in front of your infant will help them learn to focus on moving objects and they will begin learning to mimic the movement and pull the strings themselves. Another great moving toy is a simple ball, rolling the ball to your baby on the floor will keep them entertained for quite sometime.
♦ Your baby is going to grow and develop quickly at this age, learning to sit up and begin to support his or her weight is one of the greatest new skills that they will gain. This whole new view on the world can be taken advantage of by placing your baby in an exersaucer or a jumper that attaches to the doorway. Both of these items are great for entertaining your baby and for the development of their muscles and gross motor function.
♦ Mirrors are a great way to entertain your baby at this age, they love to look at themselves and it is great to help them develop focusing skills.
This is a fun age range for babies, as they are just beginning to develop a personality and better sleeping and eating habits. Typically, you should all be sleeping a little better by this point and settling into your new routines with your infant making it easier to play and have fun as well.
