Choosing a Safe Halloween Costume For Your Children

Posted by Christie in Halloween

When we think of halloween costumes we normally think of masks, wigs, face paint, and costumes… but we normally don’t think about the safety of the items that we purchase for our children’s costumes.  However, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission wants all parents to remember to put safety first this Halloween when trick or treating with your children. You may want to review these suggestions before purchasing your kids halloween costume for this year.

♦ Make sure that all costume materials are flame resistant. This includes the fabric for the costumes, wigs, beards, and bags. All of these items should carry a flame resistant label to assure that the product is safe. Keep in mind that a flame resistant product is not fire proof so keep away from open flames; however, they are supposed to slow the burning process down.

♦ Stay away from baggy, billowing, or flowing costumes as they can drag the ground, get caught in doors, stepped on which cause children to trip and fall.

♦ Keep in mind the colors of the costume that you are putting together for your child. Stay away from dark colors without reflective material as they are much harder for drivers to see in the dark. Try to get costumes that are made of light colors so that drivers will be able to see your child on the road easier.

♦ Use reflective tape to outline your child’s costume, making them even easier to see on the road and increase your child’s safety.

♦ Give your child a flashlight for them to carry as they walk along the road, increasing their ability to be seen on the road.

♦ Make sure that your children are wearing shoes that fit their feet well… do not let them wear over sized shoes on the road as they trick-or-treat which could increase their risk of falling and getting hurt.

♦ Make sure that any head gear - wigs, scarfs, and hats – are secured well so that they cannot slip down and obstruct your children’s vision as they are walking around.

♦ Avoid using plastic masks that could possibly block vision and make breathing more difficult, instead try to use face paint and create a more natural mask for your child.

♦ Make sure that all accessories to your child’s costume are made out of flexible plastics or other soft materials. This is especially true for swords, knives, hooks, tools, etc… which could injure your child if not made of child friendly material.

If you follow these simple suggestions for picking out a fun and safe Halloween costume for your child, you and your child will be able to enjoy trick-or-treating with decreased fears of accidents or injuries.

Happy Trick-or-Treating!
