My Homemade Baby Wipes Recipe
More and more parents are looking for ways to save money in their household budgets. Many are trying to find ways to eliminate expensive baby products and replace them with homemade substitutes that can be made for a fraction of the cost.
One area where it is easy to substitute a homemade counterpart is baby wipes… they are an essential necessity of parenthood. A box of wipes can cost anywhere from $2-$5 each in stores and experienced parents will tell you that you will go through wipes very quickly. Wipes quickly become your go to clean up tool for not only baby’s bottom but hands, face, and toys as well. The costs can really add up, so why not try to save a little by making your own?
There are all different types of recipes to make homemade baby wipes. You can make disposable, or one use wipe. Or you can simply mix up the solution into a spray bottle and spray it on baby’s bum as needed, then wipe clean with a washcloth that you can throw in the laundry and reuse.
You can also use homemade wipes on the go as easily as regular baby wipes. Store them in either a resalable plastic bag or a plastic travel wipes container.
The Internet is full of recipes for homemade wipes; however, I wanted to share with you the recipe that I used when I gave homemade baby wipes a try with my third child. They were easy to make and worked just as well as the commercial product.
We did save money by using them… I would just offer this one tip, make sure that the paper towel that you use is a very strong one. I learned that the hard way during a particularly ‘tough’ clean up job… not the time you want your wipe to give out on you.
First, take one roll of strong paper towels (like Brawny) and cut it in half using a knife. Be careful! Once you get it cut into two halves you need to take out the cardboard core so that the wipes will pull easily out of the center of the roll.
Then, set your two rolls of paper towels aside so that you can make your baby wipe solution. It is very simple. Mix the following ingredients in a large mixing bowl:
♦ 2 cups water
♦ 1/2 cup of baby oil
♦ 1/2 cup baby soap. I always used Baby Magic.
Lastly, Place one of the halved rolls of paper towels in an airtight container, Tupperware containers work great. Pour half of the solution over the towels in the container and seal closed. Allow some time for mixture to absorb into the towels before using to clean up messes. I always made both rolls at the same time and stored one in the nursery and one in the living room for quick access.
