Some Homemade Cleaner Recipes to Save Money ALL Around Your House

In this tough economic climate, families are cutting costs everywhere they can. Many parents are choosing to use some homemade recipes to duplicate some everyday cleaning items to help them save money… here are some that I have found from talking to them.

♦ Disinfecting Wipes

Use an empty wipes holder (the tube kind with the flip top), washed out well with soapy water, a roll of Bounty paper towels, 1/4 cup water, 1/2 cup white vinegar, tea tree essential oil, and lemon essential oil.

Cut paper towel roll in 1/2 (width-wise) with a sharp, non-serrated knife. Carefully remove the cardboard from the middle using your fingers to break it away from the paper towels. Remove the outer 1/2 of the roll by using your fingers to break apart one of the paper towels at a perforation and carefully sliding the two parts apart. Now you have two rolls. Save the outer one and you can use it as napkins or on your paper towel holder.

Pour water and vinegar in the holder and add 10 drops of tea tree oil and 6 drops of lemon oil. Mix well. Put the inner portion of paper towels in the holder. You may have to work it in. Make sure you can get hold of the inner-most paper towel, the one you broke the cardboard away from. This will be the piece that you can thread through the top.

Let the paper towel soak up the mixture and then carefully feed the inner sheet through the top. They will continually feed through this way and will break off at the perforations.

Essential oils can seem expensive, but you are only using them several drops at a time, and the little bottle lasts forever. You are still saving money, and not using harsh chemicals in your home or adding to a landfill.

♦ Powdered Laundry Soap

Mix 1 cup Borax, 1 cup washing soda, 1/2 bar Fels Naptha soap and use 1-2 teaspoons per load.

♦ Dishwashing Detergent

Mix and use per dishwasher load 1 tablespoon Borax and 1 tablespoon baking soda OR mix equal parts Borax and baking soda, and add 2 tablespoons per load. Increase proportion of soda for hard water. Use vinegar in the rinse cycle.

♦ Homemade Hand Soap

Mix these items together:

- Grate 6 oz. bar of soap into small flakes, pour in blender.

- Add 1 cup boiling water and whip.

- Add 1/2 cup room temperature water and stir in blender.

- Add 1 tablespoon honey and 1 teaspoon glycerin, stir.

- Allow mix to cool (15 minutes) then whip again.

Mixture should be 2 cups at this point. Top with cool water until mixture measures between 5 and 6 cups, whip. Pour into containers and allow to cool (do not put lids or caps on yet). After an hour, close containers. Soap mixture will thicken up. Shake before using as needed.

♦ Dish Soap

Combine two cups of liquid castile soap with 1/2 cup of warm water. Add a few drops of essential oils for a pleasant scent. Shake or mix well and place in a squeeze bottle. Shake the soap well before use.

My family and I are going to be trying a few of these to help us save money too. Give some a try and let us know what you think… and if you have your own homemade recipes for household items feel free to leave them here for everyone to try.
