Have Indoor Fun With Your Kids With These 4 Homemade Playdough Recipes
Tomorrow our weather forecaster is calling for a dreary day of rain, which at my house means that kids are usually climbing the walls. On these days we love to break out our playdough bucket with lots of play dough, tools, cookie cutters, scissors, and much more to fuel their creativity.
They can sit for hours making sculptures, pretend food, animals, and other various creations. My children, however, have a bad habit of forgetting to put lids on their play dough so several years ago I started making homemade playdough, it is cheaper and it’s edible… therefore if they accidentally take a bite of their play dough pizza, no worries.
I thought I would share with you a few of my favorite recipes for home made playdough for you and your family to try as fall weather cools down and indoor playtime becomes more of a necessity.
1. Kool-Aid Playdough
1/2 Cup salt
2 1/2 Cups Flour
2 Packages of Kool-aid powder
3 Tablespoons oil
2 Cups of Boiling Water
Mix together all of the dry ingredients into a large bowl and then first add the oil then the water and begin to knead together. I love this recipe because it smells great! Depending upon the flavor of kool-aid that you use will dictate the smell and the color of your playdough so you can make several batches for a color variety.
2. Peanut Butter Playdough
18 oz. Jar of Peanut Butter
6 Tablespoons of honey
3/4 cup non-fat dry milk
Mix all of these ingredients together and knead with your hands until well mixed and at the consistency that you like. Let kids use this play dough to create all kind of fun things. Make sure that none of your children or other children have a peanut allergy when using this recipe.
3. Oatmeal Playdough
1 part Flour
2 Parts Oatmeal
1 part water
Mix all ingredients together and then let kids form into shapes… when the shapes dry they will harden and can be painted.
4. Jello Playdough
1 Cup of flour
1/2 Cup Salt
1 Cup of Water
1 tablespoon of oil
2 teaspoons Cream of Tartar
1 (3 1/2 oz.) package unsweetened Jell-o
Mix all ingredients together and cook over medium heat, stir constantly until mixture is like mashed potatoes. Let it cool completely, then using well floured hands until the dough is dry. You will be able to let these items dry so that they can be painted too.
Keep in mind that all of these recipes need to be stored in airtight containers when they are not in use, otherwise they will all dry out and be no good. I hope that you will enjoy making one or all of these recipes with your children! Happy Playdough playing.
