Understanding the Current Peanut Butter Recall
Peanut butter is a staple food of millions of households across the world… especially ones that have young children that love eating Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches. A staple food of childhood that is served to countless children daily by parents and caretakers everywhere. So the recent news that the Food and Drug Administration has found strains of Salmonella Typhimurium in many brands is scary.
Salmonella is a food borne illness that can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, moderate fever, and chills in people 12-72 hours after they have eaten a product containing it. The severity of the reaction can depend upon age, health, fitness, and the amount of food that has been consumed. Children because of their young age are particularly vulnerable.
This particular outbreak has been linked to a Peanut Butter processing plant in Georgia that manufactures both peanut butter and peanut butter paste. Their peanut butter is used in cafeterias and institutions all over the country and their peanut butter paste is used by numerous companies as ingredients in cookies, cakes, candies, ice cream, and other foods.
The outbreak has sickened more than 400 people and killed 6 since September in 45 states across the country. The list of companies and products that are involved in the recalls seem to be changing constantly so the FDA has created a special Peanut Butter Product Recalls page that parents and consumers can check frequently.
The FDA is also cautioning that if you have concerns about any product… it is better to be safe than sorry at this point. Food safety is an important issue for parents to be mindful of at all times, especially when the food involved is one that children love so much. I encourage all parents to stay on top of this important developing story to ensure the safety of their children at this time.
Our house has replaced our PB and J sandwiches with other varieties for a little while… just to be on the safe side. I have also checked the other items in my kitchen containing peanut butter against the FDA recall list, items like: peanut butter and crackers, peanut butter ice cream sauce, candies, and some cereals. I found that two of these products were from companies that were involved in the dangers, so I threw them away.
Take a few minutes today and check out the FDA Peanut Butter Product Recalls page and go through your kitchen… you can’t be too safe with your kids health.
