Teaching Kids Colors by Taking Them on a Color Walk
A few years ago, I was trying to teach my young son his colors. We would name the colors of everything that we saw everywhere. I came up with the idea of taking my children on a color walk to help teach them their colors.
Even now, though the boys are now older and have long since known all the colors, they always ask to take a color walk about this time every year. I wanted to share the idea with you and encourage you to give it a try with your children.
First I always make them a color list. You can do this by either handwriting or using a computer to make your list. Simply write the name of each color on a piece of paper in that color. For example, write the word red in red marker or use red ink if typing the list and so on for each additional color. This will help kids see the color and learn to recognize the color word that goes with it.
Second thing we do is get each of the kids a disposable camera. You can purchase these very inexpensivly at most discount stores now. I always give them a quick lesson on how to take pictures and then we head out on our walk. It is fun to give them each their own camera so that they feel like they are doing it themselves and to see the pictures that they end up taking.
They know that they have to obey the safety rules and not run ahead too far or veer off of the sidewalk into the road so we walk around our neighborhood and each of the kids has to find one object to take a picture of for each item on their list. It is really fun to see the differenet items that they choose and even more fun to develop the pictures for them and put them into a little photo album.
They love to compare books and pictures with one another, it has been a great way to reinforce the colors and shapes around us. We enjoy doing it this time of the year as we are approaching fall because it is neat to see all the different colored leaves on the trees and how the world is changing… it is even neater to see it through their eyes.
Feel free to modify the idea in any way to fit your family but I think that this fun and easy activity to teach kids their colors will be one that children will enjoy at all ages and stages of life.
