The Ultimate Diaper Bag Checklist
No matter what type of diaper bag you choose to use… backpack, messenger, over the shoulder, or tote bag you need to make sure that it is well stocked with the essential items that you will need when you are on the go. Here is a comprehensive diaper bag checklist of all the items that you should stock in your diaper bag so that you are prepared for any event that can arise.
1. Baby Care
♦ Diapers and Diaper Sacks. I suggest as a rule to pack one diaper for every hour that you plan to be away from the house. You can purchase scented diaper sacks so that when your baby is stinky you can put them in the bags, tie them off, and throw them in the trash can in the restroom without offending anyone with the odor.
♦ Baby Wipes. These are important, not only to clean up diaper messes, but messy hands, faces, car seats and more. A must have in either a plastic wipe case or in a resalable bag that will keep them moist.
♦ Surface Wipes. Lysol makes a great surface wipe, carry a few in your diaper bag so that you can clean and disinfect public shopping carts, public tables, and highchair trays. You can keep these in a ziplock bag, but make sure that you label it so they do not get mixed up with the baby wipes.
♦ Small First Aid Kit. Especially important as kids get older, but get in the habit from the beginning.
♦ Pacifiers. I would suggest keeping two, in the event that one gets dropped on the floor. I would also suggest that you keep them in a ziplock bag so that they stay clean inside the diaper bag.
♦ Changing Pad
♦ Burp Cloth
♦ Hand Sanitizer
♦ Kleenex
♦ Hat
♦ Sun block
♦ Insect Repellant
2. Clothing
♦ Extra Change of Clothing for Child. Keep them in a gallon sized ziplock bag so that in the event you need to change clothes due to accident or spill you can use the ziplock bag to store the dirty clothes in without soiling the inside of your bag. Make sure it is a season appropriate complete change of clothes… shirt, pants, socks, sweater.
♦ An Extra Shirt for Yourself. When you get spit up or spilt on, you will be able to change quickly.
3. Food/Drinks
♦ Snacks/Food. If your baby is at the age for solid foods than make sure you keep a jar of baby food and or snacks that are age appropriate for the baby. I suggest keeping snacks, such as Cheerios, in a small plastic, air tight container to keep them fresh and keep them from getting crushed in a bag.
♦ Bottles. I always suggest packing bottles of water so that you will use the same water source that the baby is used to in order to prevent tummy troubles. If your baby feeds every three hours you will need to figure how many you will need for your estimated time you will be gone.
♦ Formula. On the go there are numerous ways to keep your formula in your diaper bag. Many formula companies make tubes that you can tear open and pour into bottles of water. You can also use plastic formula dividers that hold three feedings. You simply scoop the right amount of formula into each section and then turn the top and empty each one when needed. You can keep a can of formula in the diaper bag and simply scoop what you need as you go and keep it in the bag until empty.
♦ Nursing Pads. A must have for nursing moms!
♦ Bibs
♦ Snacks for Mom
4. Baby Toys
♦ Board Book and Toys
♦ Teething Toys
5. Other Items
♦ Camera and Extra Batteries. Keep a disposable one or an extra camera in the bag at all times, so you are always prepared to capture fun moments on the go. And… batteries for the camera if it needs them, so you will be able to keep on taking pictures.
♦ Spare Change
♦ Extra Blanket
