Making Valentine’s Day With Your Children Special

Posted by Christie in Gifts, Indoor Fun on Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

This week is Valentine’s Day, a day meant to show people around you how much you love and care about them. When you are planning your special events this week don’t forget to include some special activities that will make your children feel special and loved too.

At our house we are saving Valentine’s day evening for my husband and I to go out on a rare childless date night. We are heading to a traditional Valentine’s evening dinner and a movie and will enjoy a few hours of not breaking up fights over toys, wiping noses or any of the other tasks that often consume our days as parents.

However, we are also planning a fun week of Valentine’s Day activities with the kids too… today and tommorrow we are making homemade cards for the kids in each of their classes. I let the kids design the cards a few weeks ago and then I went and purchased all of the supplies that they will need to unleash their creativity into these cards. I am also having the kids make special Valentine’s Day gifts for their teachers tonight.

A fun thing that I also like to do with my children around Valentine’s Day is leave them love notes and small love gifts all over the house for them. I slip them into lunch boxes, backpacks, coat pockets, on their pillows, in different rooms of the house, in their toy boxes, on their car seats. Here are some examples of small love gifts that you could use: heart stickers, heart shaped candy, small stuffed animals, coloring books, a new book, a small toy that they would like.

I also like to have a special dinner for our family on the night before Valentine’s day. I will make a dinner of the kid’s favorite foods and then we will eat “fancy style”. At our house that means dressed up and by candlelight. The kids think that it is so much fun to eat this way and we all talk about how much each person means to us. The kids love it and I know that it makes them feel loved and appreciated.

On Valentine’s Day morning my children awake to cards and small gifts like balloons, stuffed animal, small toy, or new video…. along with a breakfast of red heart shaped pancakes. I use red food coloring to make my pancake batter red or pink and then use a turkey baster to spread the pancakes into a heart shape. They are a huge favorite at our house.

These are just a few of the many ways that I have tried to make Valentine’s Day a special day not just for my husband and I, but for our children to enjoy and feel special also.

If you have more ideas on fun ways your family celebrates Valentine’s Day leave them here for everyone to enjoy.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!
